The idea behind elliptical chainrings can be summarized as follows: biomechanical power output varies throughout a pedal stroke. Positions where power is higher have a larger diameter section of chainring and thus a greater engagement area, which translates into greater forward propulsion. At positions where biomechanical power is lower, a smaller chainring diameter means greater efficiency in rotation. Overall what this means for you is maximized power output throughout each pedal stroke.

Wolf Tooth notes that elliptical rings also mean steadier torque on the rear wheel as there is less spinning on the downstroke and easier rotation as a result. Steadier torque on the rear wheel gives better traction and sustained momentum – great on tough climbs and through headwinds.

• 9, 10, 11, 12spd Eagle – these chainrings are designed to work with all 9-speed, 10-speed, and 11-speed chains. They also work with 12-speed Eagle and 12-speed KMC chain. They do not work with Shimano 12-speed Hyperglide+ chain or SRAM 12-speed Flattop chain
• If using a 9-speed drivetrain use a 10-speed chain. It fits tighter for better chain retention
